![]() It had everything from nifty gadgets, a blistering arsenal, white-knuckled action, and sci-fi elements. There’s no doubt that the world of Perfect Dark is teeming with potential. It all depends on what her next outing brings. A fresh take will probably cement her as the legendary character that she was destined to be. With this reboot recently announced, maybe the third time will be the charm for her? Joanna is long overdue with the recognition that she deserves. She is always kind of lurking in the shadows with all the other heroines out there. ![]() At least, not in the likes of Chun-Li, Sonya Blade, Samus, Zelda, or even Tracer. For whatever reason, she never really became a household name. She is this cool mix of Ethan Hunt and Lara Croft. As a character, Joanna Dark has a lot going for her. Even though the Perfect Dark games has its niche group of fans, it never really had the steam that Goldeneye and other first-person shooters had. Nobody saw it coming and it reminded people that Joanna Dark still has the same appeal as ever before. It is being developed by a new team called The Initiative, which was formed in 2018. VideoĪ little over 15 years later, the world nearly forgot about Joanna Dark until a trailer dropped during the Game Awards 2020. After this title was released, Joanna Dark went, well…dark. Even though this installment got mostly good reviews, it didn’t really reach the height of popularity of its predecessor. She had to stop dataDyne from getting a hold of a mystical device that grants superhuman powers to anyone that bears it. As the title suggests, this was an origin story showing how Joanna joins the Carrington Institute. In this installment, Joanna is a flourishing bounty hunter who was trained by her father. Later in 2005, another adventure for Joanna Dark came down the pike called Perfect Dark Zero for the Xbox 360. The story revolved around two warring alien races called the Maians the Skedar using Earth as their battleground. The story sprawled across towering cities, underground bases, Area 51, and even outer space. Perfect Dark is an FPS that’s about a secret agent named Joanna Dark who works with the Carrington Institute to unravel a conspiracy weaved by dataDyne. The developers’ clearly wanted to strike the iron while it was still hot, so they created their own IP. Enjoy.Perfect Dark was a gem that was developed by Rare and released on May 22, 2000, due to the fact of the insane popularity of Goldeneye on the Nintendo 64. When I stepped back from the image I was as satisfied as any artist who is constantly evolving, more akin to tearing myself away from the image as I could work on it indefinitely and it would never see the light of day. I got experimental with the metal: I've recently been thinking my digital paintings need more contrast so I added solid black (which is supposed to be a huge no-no when digital painting) to the metallic parts of her suit to give it that comic book feel and accenting it with a luminous blue and orange to add some life to the metal plating. Hair swept out of the way of her eyes so she can see clearly, still staring into the distance. It may have been a blessing in disguise as this newer version turned out to be more refined her eyes even more seductive and her lips parted further to reveal the top row of her teeth. The remedy was to take the loss and save your work under different file names at different stages. Ostensibly, this is a thing that happens. I cursed my ailing computer and searched up the issue on Google. When I reopened my image editing program and clicked the file I was told it was corrupted. I was pleased with my progress and saved my work before retiring to some gaming before heading to bed. Gone was the cheeky smile, replaced by a seductively sleepy-eyed retro-futuristic looking young woman with her lips slightly parted looking off into the distance. I laid down a solid foundation flats, shading and highlights, changing the angle and as per usual with my depictions of femme fatales, I widened those hips and thighs to my tastes. Many years later (yesterday) I picked up my stylus and thought, let me re-apply everything I have learned over time and try again. Over a decade ago I attempted to draw that image with pencil and paper I failed miserably, my attempt's face becoming a smudge of depressing grey. I was a Playstation lad (still am) but I was enamoured by the cheeky smile of the heroine on the cover. Spoilers! This is my third shot at this picture as originally I first saw some fantastic artwork, by Will Overton I believe, on the cover of an N64 magazine advertising the game Perfect Dark.
